Product description
Echinops ritro has a naturally sculptural presence that instantly lifts a planting scheme, bringing crisp form and cool colour to the summer garden. Its tight, steel-blue flower spheres sit on upright, branching stems above deeply cut, silvery-green foliage, creating a striking contrast that works beautifully in borders, gravel gardens, and naturalistic plant beds. The blooms are a magnet for bees and butterflies, adding a clean, structural accent that stands out beautifully in any planting scheme.
As a tough, reliable herbaceous perennial, Globe Thistle thrives in well-drained soil and copes happily with poorer ground, full sun and drier conditions once established. It’s wonderfully low-maintenance, returning each year with its signature blue globes and sturdy habit, and even the dried seedheads bring winter interest and support for garden wildlife. Whether used to add height, texture, or a touch of wild elegance, Echinops ritro is a dependable performer that earns its place in any garden.

Garden Plant Size Guide

Plants in larger pots can be multiple years older than their smaller counterparts with more mature root systems and foliage. This makes them able to thrive as a full size plant in your garden quicker than smaller alternatives.
The most common size of pot that garden plants come in are 9cm/1L/3L/5L this is in reference to the diameter at the top of the pot.
9cm potted plants still remain the most popular cost effective option though, they just may take a little patience to allow them to grow into full maturity once planted in your garden.

Top Tip
Avoid over‑feeding Echinops - too much fertiliser encourages leafy growth at the expense of those distinctive globe-shaped blooms.
How to Water
Water Globe Thistle thoroughly after planting to help the roots settle into the soil, then keep the ground lightly moist while it establishes through its first season. Once mature, it becomes naturally drought-tolerant and will only need watering during extended dry spells, as it prefers conditions on the drier side.
How to Plant
Plant Echinops in a sunny spot with well-drained soil, digging a hole just slightly wider than the rootball. Set the plant in at the same depth it was growing in its pot, backfill firmly, and water well to settle the soil around the roots.
