Product description

Briza media, commonly known as quaking grass, is a tactile, semi-evergreen ornamental grass that adds essential movement and soothing sound to a garden design. It forms a neat, highly disciplined basal tuft and pushes up delicate, purplish-green spikelets that dance in the slightest breeze before slowly fading to a stunning, architectural golden straw. It is a brilliant, non-aggressive clumper that holds its visual value for months.

This rugged grass is exceptionally accommodating, happily tolerating both full, baking sun and partial, dappled shade, provided the ground drains well. It actively thrives in poor, chalky, or stony soil and rarely needs supplemental watering once established. You must never take harsh pruning shears to the crown; simply comb your fingers through the tuft in early spring to pull away the dead, brown winter blades and let the fresh green growth push through.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

The best way to manage Briza media is to comb your fingers through the clump early on to pull away the dead, brown blades. This simple grooming technique keeps the foliage looking fresh and vibrant without the need for a harsh, total chop. You can also snip the seed heads off and dry them indoors for beautiful, long-lasting floral arrangements.

How to Water

Water Briza media thoroughly upon installation to bind the fresh, gritty soil directly to the root mass. You will rarely need to break out the watering can once it has settled into its new environment. Only offer supplemental hydration to this grass if the soil becomes absolute dust during a prolonged dry spell.

How to Plant

Plant Briza media in a spot that offers excellent drainage and plenty of bright, open light. Work some horticultural grit into the planting hole to ensure the roots never sit in heavy, wet soil. Space your plants carefully so they have room to form their characteristic tidy tufts without crowding.
