Product description

Blackcurrant Ben Nevis, also known as Ribes Nigrum Ben Nevis, is a variety of blackcurrant fruit plant. Green, deciduous foliage is accompanied in spring by small, white flowers, before fruits begin to ripen throughout the summer months and are ready to harvest in July. These blackcurrants are large and deep purple in colour, with an excellent, tart flavour.

Plant these fruit plants in moist, well-drained acidic soil in a sunny spot in the garden, in open soil or a container. Blackcurrants are packed with vitamin C and can be eaten fresh from the plant, or they are excellent in jams, pies, pastries, and other sweet dishes!

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

Birds love blackcurrants, so protect your crops with netting, especially as they ripen.

How to Water

Water young plants regularly throughout the first growing season and then only during dry spells once established.

How to Plant

Before you begin, weed the area thoroughly and dig in plenty of organic matter. Dig a hole around twice the size of the root ball, remove the plant from its pot, and gently tease out the roots before backfilling, firming down, and watering in well. Blackcurrants will tolerate light shade, but for the best harvest of juicy fruit, plant in full sun in moist but well-draining soil.
