Product description

Nasturtium Whirlybird is genetically unique because its flowers face straight up toward the sky and entirely lack the elongated "spur" usually found at the back of nasturtium blooms. This biological tweak makes the nectar immediately accessible to a much wider variety of beneficial insects, turning your containers into a highly efficient feeding station. It forms a highly disciplined, compact clump that presents its vibrant, multi-coloured blossoms completely clear of the green foliage.

Give the Whirlybird a bright, unshaded home in well-draining, neutral soil to keep its structural framework rigid and strong. Moisture should be applied sparingly; if you keep the compost permanently wet, the upward-facing stems will weaken and flop over, hiding the open-faced flowers beneath the leaves. It requires zero deadheading to maintain its neat appearance throughout the summer season.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

As Nasturtium Whirlybird flowers don't have the typical "spur" at the back, they are much easier for a wider variety of bees to access. It’s a top-tier choice for a wildlife-friendly patio display.

How to Water

Water Nasturtium Whirlybird sparingly to maintain its tidy, mounded shape. If the soil stays too wet, the stems may become floppy and hide the blooms under the foliage. Aim for a "normal" to dry moisture level.

How to Plant

Set Nasturtium Whirlybird in a full sun position to ensure its upward-facing flowers stay visible above the leaves. This variety is specifically bred to be compact, so it’s great for small containers or baskets. Plant them in a light, well-draining potting mix.
