Product description

Baptisia Lemon Meringue is a massive, highly structural prairie native that functions as a permanent, shrub-like anchor in the garden. It erupts into towering spikes of bright lemon-yellow, pea-like flowers that sit beautifully above a highly disciplined mound of glaucous blue-green foliage. The tightly closed blooms are biologically designed exclusively for heavy bumblebees, and the resulting blackened seed pods provide fantastic architectural interest straight through the winter.

As this plant builds an indestructible, deep underground taproot, you must choose its permanent home carefully, as it fiercely resents being dug up or moved later. Settle it into deep, slightly acidic to neutral loam in full sun, and give it a wide berth to expand. Once established, it is exceptionally drought-tolerant, requires absolutely no staking or dividing, and only needs its dead stems chopped to the soil line before new growth emerges.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

My top tip for Baptisia Lemon Meringue is to leave the blackened seed pods on the stems straight through its dormant phase. These pods give the plant excellent architectural interest when the rest of the garden is bare. Simply cut the entire structure down to the ground just before fresh shoots appear for the next flush.

How to Water

Provide Baptisia Lemon Meringue with a deep, generous soaking immediately after planting to collapse any hidden air pockets. While highly drought-resistant once mature, it prefers consistent, even moisture during its first growing phase. Direct the hose strictly at the base to avoid splashing mud onto the foliage.

How to Plant

Dig a deep, wide hole for Baptisia Lemon Meringue, as this prairie native develops a massive, indestructible taproot. Settle the plant into rich, slightly acidic loam and firm the earth down well. Choose your permanent spot carefully, because once the root system establishes, it absolutely hates being moved.
