Characteristics: One of the oldest plants in the world, this Australian & New Zealand native has a thick, slow-growing brown trunk covered in aerial roots. It bears a wonderful contrast of bright green fronds that grow quickly from Spring onwards when cared for correctly. Trunk hardy down to -10 degrees.

Care and Maintenance: It prefers being grown in a shaded spot. If placed in a sunnier location, more water will be required. Keeping the trunk moist is vital, as well as protection in Winter by protecting the crown with straw and wrapping the trunk and fronds in layers of fleece.

Period of Interest: Bright green fronds will begin to grow from the trunk crown in Spring, continuing into Summer.

Top Tip: The Soft Tree Fern will also benefit from a regular Tree Fern Feed throughout Summer, beginning in May.

These trees will be supplied as bare root trunks from November - March, and potted from April - October. The height stated on this listing is trunk height without the fronds.

Dicksonia Antarctica, also known as Soft Tree Fern, is regarded as one of the easiest tree ferns to cultivate in the UK. It possesses a thick, slow-growing trunk that takes on gorgeous, bright green fronds. The finely dissected foliage is a great contrast for the fibrous trunk below. It guarantees a unique and tropical vibe into any outdoor space you place it in, as the fronds grow very quickly from Spring onwards.

This hardy Dicksonia tree will appreciate a shaded spot to grow in. If you decide a sunnier area is where you want to place it, be aware that watering levels should increase to keep the tree satisfied. The trunk should always be kept moist, whilst protection during the Winter is also key. The crown can be covered with straw. The trunk and fronds should be shielded by layers of fleece.
