Cercis canadensis more commonly known as The North American Redbud is large deciduous shrub or small tree, it is often multi-stemmed. The Redbud Forest Pansy has an abundance of rosy pink flowers that blossom before the foliage at the start of Spring. These flowers are displayed for a few weeks before being accompanied by the red-purple vaguely heart-shaped leaves.
As Autumn comes around the leaves turn a variety of shades of orange, copper and red-purple. The urn shape of this elegant Redbud makes it an ideal landscape tree. The Redbud Forest Pansy is an ideal specimen plant. It is also known to attract butterflies, birds and bees.
In the Autumn the leaves of the Cercis canadensis take on a luminescent red tinge as they begin to shut down for the Winter season. It is best planted in gardens that face South with a high sun contact as this ensures that the leaves stay as vibrant colouring as long as possible.
The Cercis canadensis is originally from North America and the North East of Mexico. Native Americans ate boiled or sometimes raw flowers of the wild relative of this tree as well as roasted seeds. They would also use the wood to craft their bows.
