Characteristics: Hardy annual root vegetables that are quick and easy to grow. Sweet Turnip boasts edible leafy tops and purple tinted roots.
Growth and Spread: Ultimate height and spread of up to 0.25m.
Care and Maintenance: Your Sweet Turnip will prefer full sun. Plant in moist but well-drained soil.
Period of Interest: Harvest from May to September.
Top Tip: Sweet Turnips can turn woody if the soil dries out so be sure to water during dry spells.
Sweet Turnip has white flesh and a crisp texture that is perfect for stews, casseroles and stir fry dishes. It has a sweeter flavour than regular turnip. Also known as the Salad Turnip, it makes a tasty addition to salads when grated. Even the leaves are edible and can be cooked and enjoyed in the same way as spinach.
This tasty root vegetable is easy to grow in your kitchen garden, whether in beds, borders or containers. It is best harvested young when the roots reach around 6-8cm in diameter - about the size of a golf ball. You’ll find that the smaller the roots, the sweeter the flavour.
