Characteristics: A tasty winter vegetable with white upright stems and long, blue-green leaves.
Growth and Spread: Ultimate height and spread of up to 0.5m.
Care and Maintenance: Relatively easy to grow. Plant in full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained soil. Keep the ground clear by weeding regularly, and water well during particularly dry spells.
Period of Interest: Harvest from August to February. Flowers may appear in summer.
Top Tip: Using a fork or spade to harvest minimises the risk of breaking stems.
Leeks are a popular vegetable that can be used as a side dish or to enhance soups and stews. They can be harvested in autumn and winter, when other vegetables are largely dormant. Leeks are a good source of iron and are rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, B6, C and K.
Leeks are hardy and can remain in the soil until needed, even during winter. They grow best in open ground but also work well in large pots, containers and raised beds.
Leek plants may blossom masses of tiny pale pink and white flowers the summer after harvesting. These appear as spherical clusters on top of tall stems and attract bees to the garden, which is useful for pollinating other crops. The flowers can be left to reseed for a crop the next year or removed to use as cut flowers or as food garnish.
