Characteristics: A hardy biennial ‘superfood’ vegetable with long, green-purple wavy edged leaves.
Growth and Spread: Ultimate height and spread of up to 1m.
Care and Maintenance: Plant in a sheltered spot that enjoys full sun or partial shade, in moist but well-drained soil. Kale is easy to grow and doesn’t require much maintenance to thrive - it'll only need watering during particularly dry spells.
Period of Interest: Kale has a long lasting harvesting period from September to March.
Top Tip: Removing flower shoots as they appear will help encourage more leaf growth.
Kale belongs to the cabbage family and is renowned for the high amount of fibre, vitamins and antioxidants it contains. Young tender leaves can be eaten raw in salads or added to stir fries while more mature leaves work well in stews and soups. Kale is a great way to incorporate home grown vegetables into your diet when not much else is growing in the garden.
Kale works well in a vegetable patch or planted in a border or window box for ease of harvesting. It is a cut and come again plant, which means you can harvest just a few leaves at a time as needed and it will grow back. Kale can be stored in the fridge for up to 10 days, or you can blanch and freeze it for future use.
If you choose to let the plant flower, the yellow blooms will attract bees to the garden to help pollinate crops.
This 8 cell tray of Kale arrives ready for re-potting into vegetable beds or windowsill planters and containers.
Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.
