Salvia Officinalis Purpurea is a low-maintenance sub shrub boasting aromatic oblong foliage with a fuzzy texture. Young leaves are flushed with purple, turning grey-green as they mature. Terminal racemes of small blue-purple flowers bloom in summer, crowning the plant in colour.
Commonly known as purple sage, this garden herb has plenty of culinary uses. It is often added to stews and casseroles as well as for flavouring stuffing and sausages. Its distinct flavour complements meat and poultry well.
Purple sage is easy to care for, largely looking after itself in the right conditions. It prefers a sunny spot in light well-draining soil. Sage is drought-tolerant, so doesn’t need frequent watering. Prune in spring to promote fresh bushy growth.
