Characteristics: Evergreen foliage and fully hardy. Develops rounded trusses of deep red funnel-shaped flowers with attractive dark green leaves
Height & Spread: Grows to around 1.5m tall, spreads to roughly 1.5m wide.
Period of Interest: Year-round interest. Clusters of funnel-shaped red-pink flowers appearing in Spring.
Plant Advice: Plant in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Prefers acidic soils. Grows best in sheltered partially shaded areas.
Rhododendron 'Nova Zembla' is an easy to grow and colourful evergreen shrub, with fantastic dark green foliage situated on a sturdy upright plant. The most obvious feature of this variety is it's stunning deep red flowers that start to bloom around May, and are quickly joined by a smattering of dark spots. The flowers can fade to a deep pink when exposed to full sun, but these plants in general are extremely hardy, and are commonly used as a dense screen hedging when they reach full maturity.
This plant can tolerate most soils so long as it is well-drained, and is equally suited to shaded or exposed areas of your garden.
