Product description

Thyme 'Creeping Red' is a vibrant, mat-forming herb cultivated primarily for the spectacular carpet of deep crimson-pink flowers it produces in summer. While the tiny, dark green leaves possess a mild, aromatic thyme scent that is released when the plant is crushed or stepped on, it is less commonly used in the kitchen than the bushy culinary thymes. Instead, it is traditionally used as a stunning, drought-tolerant lawn substitute or planted between paving stones to create a fragrant, colourful walkway that releases a pleasant aroma underfoot.

This plant is typically grown as a hardy, low-spreading evergreen ground cover that hugs the soil tightly, suppressing weeds and softening hard landscaping edges. It is incredibly tough and frost-tolerant, capable of handling light foot traffic better than almost any other herb. For the best results and the most vivid floral display, plant it in a location with full sun. It is highly drought-tolerant and thrives in poor, sandy, or rocky soil, as it will rapidly rot if placed in damp, heavy, or fertile ground.

Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only - The plant will be supplied in a growers pot.

Instructions

Top Tip

Thyme 'Creeping Red' is excellent for biodiversity. When in bloom, the flat carpet of flowers becomes a "bee magnet," providing a rich source of nectar for pollinators right at ground level.

How to Water

Once established, Thyme 'Creeping Red' requires very little water and is well-adapted to dry, rocky environments. Only water it during prolonged dry spells to keep the foliage green; overwatering is the main cause of failure for this plant.

How to Plant

Plant Thyme 'Creeping Red' in gritty, well-drained soil. It is perfect for rockeries, gravel gardens, or filling the crevices between patio slabs. If your soil is heavy clay, you must improve the drainage with plenty of sharp sand or grit before planting.
