Product description

Thyme Common is a staple culinary herb cultivated widely for the earthy, savoury flavour found in its tiny, dark green leaves. This robust taste, which retains its potency even after long, slow cooking, is released when the woody stems are added to stocks, stews, and casseroles. It is traditionally used as a key component of a bouquet garni and is essential for seasoning roast chicken and root vegetables, offering a warm, aromatic depth that complements hearty dishes perfectly.

This plant is typically grown as a hardy, low-growing evergreen shrub that forms a neat mound, making it ideal for edging paths or planting in rockeries. It is extremely tough and frost-tolerant, providing structure in the garden year-round. For the best results and most concentrated oils, plant it in a location with full sun. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and demands poor, gritty, free-draining soil, as it will rot quickly if left in damp, waterlogged ground.

Please Note: When purchasing plants please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only - The plant will be supplied in a growers pot.

Instructions

Top Tip

Thyme Common can become woody and straggly after a few years if left untouched. To keep it compact and productive, trim the plant lightly after it finishes flowering to encourage fresh, bushy growth, but avoid cutting into the old, bare wood.

How to Water

Water young Thyme Common plants regularly to help them settle in, but once established, reduce watering significantly. It is a Mediterranean plant that prefers dry conditions; only water when the soil is completely dry to prevent root rot.

How to Plant

Plant Thyme Common in a hot, sunny spot with sharp drainage, adding grit or sand to the soil if it is heavy. Ensure the crown of the plant sits slightly above the soil surface to improve air circulation and prevent dampness around the base.
