Product description

Lemon Verbena is a graceful, woody shrub cultivated primarily for the incredible, sherbet-like citrus fragrance found in its rough, lance-shaped leaves. This intense aroma, widely considered the purest lemon scent in the plant kingdom, is released effortlessly when the foliage is brushed or crushed. It is traditionally used as a supreme infusion for herbal teas and tisanes, but also works beautifully in syrups, ice creams, and fruit salads, where it imparts a zesty kick without the acidity of actual lemon juice.

This plant is typically grown as a tender deciduous shrub that can become quite straggly and tall if left unpruned. It is sensitive to the cold; while it naturally drops its leaves and goes dormant in winter, the root system must be protected from hard frosts. For the best results and the highest concentration of essential oils, plant it in a location with full, sheltered sun. It is moderately drought-tolerant but thrives in poor, free-draining soil, as it will struggle in heavy, rich ground that stays wet.

Instructions

Top Tip

Don't panic when Lemon Verbena drops all its leaves as temperatures drop—it is deciduous, not dead. Keep the bare stems frost-free over winter, and fresh green shoots will burst forth again in late spring.

How to Water

Water Lemon Verbena regularly during the growing season to keep the leaves lush, but ensure the pot drains perfectly. In winter, when the plant is dormant and leafless, keep the soil barely moist—just enough to stop the roots drying out completely.

How to Plant

Plant Lemon Verbena in a container using a gritty, free-draining compost mix. This allows you to easily move the plant into a greenhouse, conservatory, or porch when the weather turns cold, ensuring its survival for the next year.
