Product description
English Lavender is a classic flowering herb cultivated primarily for the sweet, floral fragrance found in its purple flower spikes and narrow grey-green leaves. This delicate flavour, which is perfumed and slightly sweet with hints of citrus, is released when the buds are dried or infused in sugar. It is traditionally used as a sophisticated flavouring for shortbread, ice creams, and soothing teas, as well as being the gold standard for dried sachets and essential oils due to its legendary calming properties.
This plant is typically grown as a hardy, compact evergreen shrub that forms a neat, silver-green mound, making it the ideal choice for low hedging or path edging. It is extremely tough and frost-tolerant, capable of surviving harsh winters provided the drainage is good. For the best results and the highest concentration of essential oils, plant it in a location with full sun. It is highly drought-tolerant once established and thrives in poor, chalky, or gritty soil, as it will rot quickly if placed in heavy, fertile, or waterlogged ground.

Garden Plant Size Guide

Plants in larger pots can be multiple years older than their smaller counterparts with more mature root systems and foliage. This makes them able to thrive as a full size plant in your garden quicker than smaller alternatives.
The most common size of pot that garden plants come in are 9cm/1L/3L/5L this is in reference to the diameter at the top of the pot.
9cm potted plants still remain the most popular cost effective option though, they just may take a little patience to allow them to grow into full maturity once planted in your garden.

Top Tip
English Lavender must be pruned annually to keep it compact and living a long time. Cut the plant back firmly in late summer after the flowers have faded, removing the flower stalks and about 2-3cm of leafy growth. Crucially, never cut back into the bare, woody stems, as the plant cannot regrow from old wood.
How to Water
Water young plants regularly during their first summer to ensure they root deeply. Once established, English Lavender thrives on neglect and prefers dry soil. Avoid overhead watering that wets the foliage, as this can encourage disease; instead, water at the base only during extreme droughts.
How to Plant
Plant English Lavender in an open, sunny spot with free-draining soil. It hates "wet feet," so if you have heavy clay soil, you must mix in coarse grit or plant it on a raised mound (a ridge) to lift the roots out of the damp. It also thrives in pots if used with a gritty, loam-based compost.
