Product description

Nasturtium 'Blue Pepe' is a popular annual, famously prized for its unique, blue-green foliage and the fact that all its parts are edible. The primary parts used for their culinary value are the leaves and the flowers, which both provide a distinct, peppery, watercress-like flavour. However, its edibility doesn't stop there; the immature green seed pods can also be harvested and pickled, where they are often used as a substitute for capers.

When it comes to planting and maintenance, this is an easy-to-grow, mounding or trailing annual that is very adaptable. It is not fussy about its light conditions and will thrive in locations with either full sun or partial shade. The main requirement for it to flower well is providing it with poor, well-drained soil; if the soil is too rich or fertile, you will get far more leaves than flowers. As an added benefit to the garden, its attractive flowers are known to be very popular with pollinators.

Instructions

Top Tip

Children love Nasturtium 'Blue Pepe' because you can gently pull the spur off the back of the flower to suck out a tiny drop of sweet nectar. For the spiciest kick, harvest the leaves when they are small and young, as older leaves become tougher and hotter.

How to Water

Water Nasturtium 'Blue Pepe' moderately when young to help it establish, but reduce watering once mature. Allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings encourages more flowers rather than just leafy growth.

How to Plant

Sow or plant Nasturtium 'Blue Pepe' in a sunny spot with poor, well-drained soil if you want abundant flowers, or richer soil if you prefer lush leafy growth. Avoid over-feeding as this reduces flowering.
