Product description

Arenaria montana, commonly known as mountain sandwort, is a rugged, low-growing alpine perennial that forms a dense, cascading green mat. It completely covers itself in a blanket of crisp, open white flowers, making it an exceptional choice for softening the harsh edges of masonry and paving.

This mountain native absolutely demands a highly gritty, fast-draining soil mix and a position in full, unobstructed sunlight. Ignore it completely with the watering can once established, and give the entire mat a severe, brutal haircut immediately after the blooms fade to prevent the centre from turning woody.

Please Note: When purchasing plants, please consider that each live item is unique and may therefore differ from the images shown, which are for illustration purposes only. The plant will be supplied in a growers pot. Depending on season, some plants may be pruned back to encourage growth and deciduous plants may arrive without leaves.

Instructions

Top Tip

To stop the centre of your Arenaria montana from turning brown and woody over time, give it a severe haircut right after the white flowers drop. Take a pair of sharp shears and chop the entire green mat back by half. This harsh treatment immediately triggers a fresh, dense wave of pristine green growth to fill the gap.

How to Water

Drench the rocky pocket immediately to help the soil settle around the roots of Arenaria montana. Once it takes hold, practically forget about your watering can unless you experience a severe, prolonged drought. This rugged creeping mat will quickly rot away into a slimy mess if forced to sit in permanently wet soil.

How to Plant

Wedge Arenaria montana into the well-drained crevices of a rockery or the extreme front edge of a sunny border. Heavily amend the planting hole with coarse sand or horticultural grit to mimic its natural alpine home. Press the gritty earth firmly around the roots, letting the trailing green stems spill out naturally.
