McCain 'Premiere' First Early Seed Potatoes are a variety of potato with great flavour and versatility. A high yield of oval-shaped potatoes will grow, bearing gold skin and a creamy texture. They are also a good choice for culinary uses such as making chips, roasties and mash, as well as being boiled or steamed. They should be planted in late February and will harvest in the months of May - June. Place them in a sheltered plot of the garden in moist, well-drained soil. If space is limited, growing them in potato bags is another suitable option.
First early potatoes will need chitted around 6 weeks before planting as it encourages the seed potatoes to develop sprouts. This will result in the growth of strong shoots and heavy crops, giving your potatoes the best possible start. Chitting should be done in seed trays, empty egg cartons or shallow boxes, on a cool, bright windowsill. Plant them 30cm apart and separate rows by 40cm once the soil has started to warm up. Dig a trench around 10cm deep in a position with plenty of sun and water regularly.
