Matteuccia Struthiopteris or simply call it the Ostrich Fern, as its leaves resemble the feathers of an ostrich. It is a deciduous fronds-forming, herbaceous perennial that will produce a fern forming colony of tall and erect leaves. Its upright and arching habit makes it a great as a landscaping plant. The leaves emerge from a rhizome from under the ground. Ostrich Fern is an excellent plant that provides attractive lush greenery.

This fern produces tall fronds that exhibit the appearance of feathers of ostrich. The leaves grow in spring as narrow at the base, wider on the top of the clump and narrow at the tips again. The medium green leaflets look very ornamental and provide an interesting bright contrast for other smaller shrubs in a terrestrial garden. It loses its leaflets in autumn as the plant sleeps in winter, only to rise and shine again in the spring.

Ostrich Fern is relatively easy to grow and comes with its basic demands to thrive in any wet soil. Plant it in a cool region, preferably shady position under taller trees. It will thrive in a moist or wet soil. It is highly tolerant of full shade but dislikes hot humid environment.

As long as the soil is constantly fed with moisture, this plant will continue to stand out with full energy. Any dead or damaged leaves can be removed in early spring. The clumps can be lifted and divided into multiple colonies.

Ostrich Fern is suitable for rain gardens and terrestrial gardens. Use them to create decorative borders and beds. Planting them near a water source will be a great choice. They are perfect for creating a lush green forest-like environment, for those who love to feel closer to nature.
