• Plant advice: Your Magnolia will thrive in a space that benefits from access to full sun or partial shade. Grows best in well-drained, non-chalky soil with a neutral pH. There will be no need for pruning as this variety naturally forms a compact, round shape as it grows, however it may be prudent to give the tree an occasional trim to aid removal of dead, damaged or otherwise unwanted branches. Water well until established.

This eyecatching deciduous Magnolia hybrid is a cross between Liliiflora Nigra and Magnolia Stellata, bred to flower in April through May to avoid the early spring frosts that can damage its delicate new growths. A prize winner, this variety has been recognised by the RHS for its many qualities: resilience, attractive appearance, reliability and excellent performance, earning it the Award of Garden Merit.

‘Ricki’ showcases a gorgeous display of purple-pink buds, opening up to distinctive rose pink cup-shaped blooms that will be a fantastic focal point of a garden, or part of a standalone feature plant. As its flowers begin to fade, the ovate foliage will remain for a splash of green, before turning shades of yellow in autumn and shedding as winter approaches.
