Plant advice: Your new Magnolia shrub will thrive in a position that benefits from full sun or partial shade. Use well-drained / moist but well-drained soil with an acid or neutral pH, preferably clay, loam or sand. Minimal pruning required – however, if needed, it should be carried out in midsummer, when the plant is in full leaf. Remove any bent, broken, diseased or otherwise unwanted branches.
Plant the tree when dormant in early spring. In the first 6-12 months after planting, make sure to keep it watered, especially during warm or dry weather. Despite being hardy, the emerging buds may experience damage caused by dry, cold winds – it is therefore best to shelter your Magnolia during the coldest months.
Magnolia liliiflora Nigra is one of the smaller Magnolia hybrids, making it perfect for a garden that is a bit more modest in size. In mid spring, the shrub will enter its flowering period with an abundance of deep plum purple blooms with red undertones, counting 9 to 18 tepals, and may continue to sporadically bloom for the remainder of summer. With its elegant stature, the tree would make for an excellent addition to a city garden or a cottage garden, and will attract bee and bird visitors.
