Gaultheria Mucronata ‘Signaal’ commonly known as Box Berry or Wintergreen Signaal, is a small sized evergreen shrub, typically grown as ground covers. It is a hardy plant that blooms white flowers in spring and bear delicious attract red berries in winters.
Plant Gaultheria Wintergreen and witness dazzling clusters of large scarlet berries as the plant continue to thrive into winter season. It is also known as Prickly Health Signaal. The beautiful clusters of berries set against dark green leaves, create a scenic view in a woodland garden.
Gaultheria Signaal profusely blooms bell-shaped dioecious flowers in spring and summer. Since these individual flowers are dioecious, another opposite gender plant will be required nearby to produce berries in winters.
These dwarf shrubs will thrive in acidic soil that is rich in humus and well-drained. Even though they will adapt to loamy soils, they do not like loam-based soils. Plant them in full sun light as low-level ground covers or low hedging.
Add a feed of ericaceous compost to the base and prune any suckers to limit spreading growth. Gaultheria Signaal carries winter interest, their bright berries are juicy and have a pleasant sweet flavour. These berries find their best application in fruit desserts.
