Characteristics: Deciduous perennial with long green lance shaped leaves, purple stems and yellow and red flowers.
Growth and Spread: Ultimate height of 0-5-1m and spread of 0.1-0.5m.
Period of Interest: New growth appears in spring, with flowers appearing through summer and autumn.
Care and Maintenance: Plant in a spot with full sun or partial shade and keep the soil moist but well drained. No pruning is required but dead leaves and flowers should be removed ready for new spring growth. Deadhead during summer and autumn to promote regrowth.
Top Tip: Move into a garage or outbuilding before the first frost to protect pot-grown Crocosmia Harlequin from harsh winter temperatures.
Commonly known as Montbretia, Crocosmia Harlequin is a low maintenance herbaceous perennial. It is characterised by long, upright lance-shaped leaves in a deep green hue, and features striking dark purple flower stems. The flowers themselves are bright and cheerful, in alternating shades of yellow and orange-red.
New green foliage grows in spring with the stems and flowers making an appearance throughout the summer and autumn months. As this is a deciduous plant, you may wish to cut back dead leaves and flowers at the end of the season to prepare for regrowth in spring.
Montbretia has a clump forming habit and is ideal for borders, adding colour and height late into the season. It is winter hardy to temperatures as low as around -10°C, but may require some additional help through the winter months if planted in a pot or container.
