Characteristics: Cotinus Magical Red Fountain is a deciduous shrub boasting striking colours. Purple foliage emerges in Spring with plumes of deep pink flowers throughout the Summer.
Growth and Spread: Ultimate height of 2m and spread of 1.5m.
Care and Maintenance: Plant in moist but well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage a bright leaf display and maintain the plant’s size and shape.
Period of Interest: Foliage interest from Spring to Autumn. Flowers in July, August and September.
Cotinus Magical Red Fountain is often referred to as the Smoke Bush, due to the wispy nature of its flower plumes. These deep pink flowers begin to appear in July, lasting for months and attracting bees, butterflies and other pollinators to the garden.
Vivid purple-red foliage gives Cotinus Magical Red Fountain an Autumnal glow, even in the Spring and Summer months. However, you’ll know the season is changing when the leaves start to turn a fiery shade of orange as Autumn descends.
This eye-catching shrub provides an attractive colour contrast in mixed beds but also makes quite the statement as a standalone plant. It is undemanding and grows well in most moderately fertile soil types.
