The Camellia Japonica “Black Tie” has beautiful double flowers with a vibrant red colour suitable for cutting for flower arrangements.
The plant is an upward grower and being an evergreen, the glossy green leaves will be present year-round and add a vibrant note of green to your garden during the colder, grey months.
The petal patterns are intricate and present in a compact bloom. Remove dead heads after flowering to encourage future growth. Prune after the flowering season, as the buds set in summer for the following season.
The plant prefers partially-shaded areas, which offer protection, but allow regular moisture to be available. One suggested planting option for this plant is to use a pot or tub that allows for a more acidic soil while retaining moisture, but drains well.
With winter protection in colder climates, the Camellia species will provide you with wonderful late-winter, early spring blooms. However, this is why placement is critical for the planting area. In addition to being sheltered and protected for winter, this plant needs to avoid exposure to the rising sun as this can cause the blooms to spoil while there is still frost on the plant.
