Characteristics: Clump-forming herbaceous perennial shrub with strap-shaped, dark green foliage beneath tall stems carrying rich purple flowers in Summer.
Growth & Spread: Ultimate height of 0.5 – 1m and spread of 0.1 – 0.5m.
Period of Interest: Summer interest. Tall, strong stalks bearing trusses of deep purple flowers with a near-black central stripe on each petal from Summer.
Water & Maintenance: Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Keep in full sun in a sheltered position. Mulch to protect from cold and frosts. Avoid overwatering in Winter.
A herbaceous perennial with richly coloured blooms which is well suited in most garden flower displays. The Agapanthus ‘Royal velvet’, more commonly known as African Lily, is a beautiful variety with long, strap-like, dark green foliage that clumps beneath tall stems which carry clusters of deep purple flowers in Summer with even deeper purple, near black, stripes along each petal. A very eye-catching display that can be planted in any position as part of a shrub bed thanks to its stalks.
Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils and keep in full sun. Be sure to water well in the Summer months and keep in a sheltered position during the Winter to avoid harsh winds. Mulching is highly recommended in the Winter to protect from frosts. Avoid waterlogging in the Winter.
