Care and Maintenance: When placed in the right spot, Platycordon demands little attention. Spent blooms can be deadheaded to encourage fresh flowering or left to promote seed propagation. Cut the plant right back in autumn ready for new growth in spring. Mulching will help the plant survive harsh winter temperatures well.
Period of Interest: Fresh foliage emerges in spring and blossoms large round buds in early summer. These pop into white star-shaped flowers that last through autumn.
Top Tip: Cut stems for flower arranging before the buds blossom into flowers and you’ll be able to enjoy the blooms indoors for longer.
Perfect for borders, rock gardens and pots, this herbaceous perennial adds height and interest to the garden. Platycodon is also known as Balloon Flower, due to the large round buds that bloom from the top of tall stems. These buds appear in early summer and blossom into pretty pure white flowers with a striking star shape. Blue-green foliage complements the flowers, with lance-shaped, serrated leaves growing from the stems.
Platycodon flowers are long lasting and provide colour during the summer and autumn months. They are popular for flower arranging, and can be cut to enjoy placed in a vase indoors. Singeing the bottom of the stems after cutting helps the flowers last longer and stops the milky sap seeping into the vase.
Balloon Flowers thrive in full sun or partial shade and prefer a loamy, moist but well-drained type of soil. This plant is hardy, but will still benefit from mulching over winter to offer extra protection against harsh temperatures.
