Our Wildlife Mix does exactly what it says on the tin and will bring an abundance of wildlife in to your garden. If this hedge is maintained and pruned at the right time it will produce an abundance of wild fruits for your wild birds and wildlife.
This mixed hedge selection is made up of a number of bare root hedge species. Please see below for a breakdown of the varieties included in this mix.
Crateagus Monogyna is commonly known as 'Hawthorn', 'Quickthorn' or 'Whitethorn', it is an extremely popular UK native hedge that displays vibrant white flowers spring/summer before showing off wonderful red haws (berries) in Autumn/winter. The sharp thorns are a great intruder deterrent as well as being a safe area for birds and other wildlife to nest and shelter.
Prunus spinosa is commonly known as 'Blackthorn' and is an extremely popular UK native hedge that displays large clusters of vibrant white flowers in Spring before showing off wonderful bright green foliage in Spring/Summer. Blackthorn has edible sloe berries that are used in the making of sloe gin. If the berries are left alone you will have an aray of wild birds showing interest in clearing out your berries as they provide wild birds with a protective area for nesting as well as feeding. This can also act as a great deterrent for intruders as the thorns that protrude from this spiny hedge will not let anyone through unharmed.
Ligustrum Vulgare is commonly known as 'Wild Privet' it is an extremely popular semi-evergreen hedge that displays deep green foliage in spring along with white flowers that attract butterflies and bees. Ligustrum will often keep it's leaves unless it is hit by a hard frost and in that case they will drop all foliage. In autumn you get the attractive black berries that are a great source of food for many species of wild birds. This plants bushy habitat makes a great safe nesting place for wild birds .
Amelanchier Lamarckii is commonly known as 'Juneberry' and is an extremely popular UK native hedge that displays bright white flowers with dark red fruits in summer and purple-black in autumn. If you don’t get to the fruits quick enough the birds will have a feast on these apple flavoured treats. The colour changes of foliage through the year are amazing from a pink silky colour on to a vibrant green colour in summer then on to warm gold in autumn.
Alnus Glutinosa is commonly known as 'Common Alder' and is an extremely popular UK native shrub hedge that displays dark green leaves. This plant also has a wonderful display of yellow/red catkins that form on the tree and will form brown cones. These plants are excellent for very wet areas of soil in your garden and can even be planted in coastal areas.
