Characteristics: Hardy and simple to grow vegetables, ready to harvest in weeks. The white bulbs develop beneath ground with thin, dark green leaves growing above the surface.
Growth and Spread: Ultimate height of up to 0.4m and spread of up to 0.2m.
Care and Maintenance: Plant in well-drained soil, careful not to overwater so the area doesn’t become waterlogged. Spring onions thrive in a spot with full sun or partial shade. Keep the area weed free by hand weeding to avoid disturbing the plants.
Period of Interest: Harvest from March to October.
Top Tip: Prune any flowering heads as soon as they appear to help prevent the plant bolting.
Spring onions can be eaten raw or cooked and are ideal for adding to salads, wraps, sandwiches, nachos and stir fry dishes. They have a fresh oniony taste that is milder and sweeter than larger onions. Spring onions are a great source of fibre, calcium and vitamins C, A and B6.
Spring onions are easy to grow and don’t take up much space in the garden, making them perfect for filling a gap in the vegetable patch. These plants also work well in pots, containers and window boxes, provided there are plenty of drainage holes. They are tastiest when harvested young and can be lifted from the ground for use as required.
