Cabbage seeds are typically planted later in the year and harvested early in the year, but they can be planted almost all year round except in the winter months. Because of this, cabbages can be planted and harvested in a fairly continuous cycle, making them a popular core vegetable to grow in the garden. Cabbages grow at ground level and you may have heard of cabbage patches which are simply areas of soil where cabbages are grown. Historically, most houses grew some type of vegetable in the garden and cabbage patches were common across the UK. Today, growing cabbages has fallen rather by the wayside as more people are opting to use shop bought cabbages. We believe absolutely nothing beats a home-grown cabbage and think it is about time for the tradition of cabbage growing to return to the UK once more.
