Trees can really make a garden come to life. They provide structure and height on another level to shrubs and can offer year-round interest. Watching trees grow and mature over the years can be incredibly satisfying.

Many people think garden size is important and that you need a large outdoor space to plant just one tree, never mind several trees. However, this is not necessarily the case. Of course, if you want to show off a large oak tree, then you will need a fair bit of room. But there is a huge choice of smaller trees available that flourish in more limited spaces and can even be grown in pots.

Why plant a tree?

Not only do trees make a garden look full and attractive, but they also help the world around them in numerous ways. Trees help clean and purify the air that we breathe. They absorb water and help prevent flooding and soil erosion. They provide a habitat and food for local wildlife. And that's all before we consider the beautiful blossom, lush foliage and tasty fruit trees provide us with.

You don't need to plant a whole woodland worth of trees to make a difference. Even one or two carefully selected trees will create an impressive and attractive show in the garden.

How to choose the right tree for your garden

Before selecting a tree to plant, it's worth taking time to make sure you order the perfect tree for your specific space.

The Gardener's Dream website features an easy to use search function that allows you to browse trees by type and purpose. There is plenty of information on each page, which will help guide you toward the right choice of tree for your garden.

Things you want to consider before placing an order for your new tree include:

Size

Check how big the tree will be when it reaches its full potential and make sure you have room for it in your garden. On the other hand, you want to make sure a small tree won't look lost in a bigger space.

Type

Do you want the year-round interest afforded by an evergreen tree or would you prefer to watch a deciduous species develop and morph with the seasons?

Purpose

Are you planting a tree for privacy, fruit, colour or another reason? This will help narrow down your options and guide you in the right direction.

Whether you want to add height to your garden, brighten up a drab patio area or grow your own fruit, Gardener's Dream has the right tree for you. Take a look at some of our favourites:

Best Native Trees

Native trees are species that have been found in the UK for thousands of years. You'll often find these types of trees in natural woodland areas. Native trees are perfect for those just starting out on their gardening journey or for more seasoned gardeners looking for a low maintenance addition to their outdoor space. These trees are already well used to our climate and can cope with (almost) anything the Great British weather throws at them.

Fagus sylvatica Purpurea

Better known as the Purple Beech, this is a stunning tree with rich purple foliage providing colour interest throughout the summer months before turning bronze-brown in autumn. Smooth grey bark contrasts beautifully with the distinctive foliage. These trees can also be used like shrubs to create hedging in a large garden.

Sorbus aucuparia

This deciduous tree is often called Common Mountain Ash and adds a somewhat dramatic flair to the garden. Rich green leaves appear in spring, alongside clusters of small creamy-white flowers. In autumn, the foliage transforms into various fiery hues of red and orange. Clusters of juicy red berries add to the attractive appearance and offer valuable food for local wildlife.

Quercus robur

No guide to native trees would be complete without mentioning the classic English Oak. This majestic specimen is most often found in woodland and does require a fair bit of space in the garden for planting. It is, however, worth it. Dark green lobe-shaped leaves turn into an impressive show of autumn colour as the seasons progress. Acorns appear in autumn, providing local wildlife with an important food source. Gnarled bark and far-reaching branches ensure interest is still maintained through the winter months.

Best Fruit Trees for the Garden

Raise your kitchen gardening game by planting a fruit tree. Fruit trees are growing in popularity as many species grow well in the garden. Growing your own fruit can be incredibly rewarding. Even if you don't manage to enjoy the full yield yourself, you can rest assured local wildlife will appreciate it as they won't need to search so far and wide for food.

Apple Trees

There's a reason apple trees are so popular in the UK and that is they are so easy to grow here. Take your time to consider what kind of apple you'd prefer your tree to yield. Cooking apples are perfect for desserts and sauces. The ever-popular Golden Delicious produces a tasty snack and blooms attractive flowers in spring. Apple trees are extremely easygoing. They can be planted in any type of soil, don't require watering or feeding and thrive with little to no pruning.

Plum Trees

If you're looking for a fast-growing fruit tree, look no further than the plum tree. Marjories Seedling and Victoria are two of the most popular plum trees that grow well in the British climate. They both produce impressive yields and the Victoria is even self-pollinating. This means you don't need both male and female trees nearby for the fruit to be plentiful.

Pear Trees

Pear trees also do well in the UK. These trees thrive in pots so you can enjoy growing your own fruit even in a small space. Pear trees tend to bloom slightly earlier than apple trees so they complement them well. The classic Conference pear tree is self-fertilising so doesn't require a second tree nearby to pollinate it.

Best Patio Trees for Growing in Pots

You don't need a huge area to successfully grow trees. Small gardens and patios can benefit from the height and colour afforded by smaller trees growing in pots. There is a wide variety available in both deciduous and evergreen species. Potted trees may be placed close to buildings and help create interest with lush leaves, beautiful bark and bewitching blossom.

Hydrangea Macrophylla

A compact 'lollipop' structure and vibrant colour make this species of deciduous tree a popular choice for patios. They thrive in pots and require very little maintenance to remain healthy and attractive. Lush green foliage and brightly coloured flowers begin to appear in spring and last through to autumn when they will start to fade in preparation for winter. The tree will bloom just as fully next year.

Euonymus Kathy

Also known as the Japanese Spindle Bush, this ornamental tree is trained into a lollipop stem. It is evergreen in nature and, as such, adds colour and interest to your outdoor space throughout the year. In summertime, these trees blossom small beautiful pale green flowers, occasionally followed by small fruits in the autumn.

Kilmarnock Willow

As you might guess, the Kilmarnock Willow is native to Scotland and planting one in a pot creates a striking focal point for patios. In spring the drooping branches bloom fluffy catkins, which bees and other pollinators find irresistible. Soft grey-green leaves appear in late spring and last through to autumn.
