What Are Plug Plants?

If you usually struggle with growing your summer bedding display from seed, then plug plants are an excellent alternative. These garden ready plugs are in fact small plants, grown in seed trays by our gardening experts.

Each plug is an individual plant that has been nurtured and germinated in a plug within a tray. All you need to do is pop out the plug plant and 'plug' it into the ground.

Plug plants are extremely popular as they enable you to create quite extravagant displays with bedding plants without all the fuss.

At Gardeners Dream, we find that our flower plant plugs are best-sellers year on year, offering a quick solution for gardeners. They also make excellent gifts or supplies for your gardening club - beginners love them!

Along with our ferns and climbing plants, this category of products at Gardeners Dream always sells out fast.

Add your favourite plug plants to your basket now to avoid disappointment.

How to Use Plug Bedding Plants

The first thing you need to do is decide which plant varieties you will grow from plug plants.

Our plant stock at Gardeners Dream includes flowering plant types such as begonia (including trailing begonia), basket plants that are ideal for hanging baskets, and mixed colour plug plants featuring bidens, fuschia, bacopa, and many more.

Choose plug plants that will grow into the space you are gardening for, whether it's a flower bed or set of window boxes.

You should also consider:

  • Flowering months, and whether it's the right time of year to plant the plug plants.

  • The flowering plant type, whether it's perennial or annual.

  • Preferred soil type, e.g. acidic soil.

  • Preferred sun exposure, e.g. partial shade.

  • Drought resistance, for reliably moist soil.

  • And your garden style. Many of our plug plant sets are ideal for cottage gardens!

Once you have chosen and ordered the young plants (there's free delivery on every flowering plant at Gardeners Dream!), they will arrive in a compact tray.

To use the garden-ready plugs, you should first give them a good water and let them acclimatise for a few hours in a greenhouse.

Next, gently ease out each plug (usually 5 to 10cm in height depending on the seeds) and plant in fertile, moist and well-drained soil.

Depending on the plugs you have purchased from Gardeners Dream, they can go straight in the ground, flower beds, or containers such as patio pots and hanging baskets.

Cut flower heads when they die (deadheading) to encourage the plant stock to continue flowering throughout the flowering months

Most of our flower pouches prefer to flourish in full sun positions.

For a plant that prefers to thrive in sun shade, browse our full range of herbaceous plants next. They're excellent value for money!

Advantages of Vegetable Plug Plants

Some gardeners prefer to create a bumper crop in the greenhouse or containers using vegetable plug plants. This is a good way to start off your vegetables this year, but don't underestimate the joy of growing little gem lettuce or broad bean seeds yourself.

The big advantage of plug plants is that you avoid the will they/won't they worries of seed germination. You know that your plants are already thriving when you purchase them.

If you want to grow fruit trees, then we highly recommend purchasing them from our online store. We offer free delivery on every fruit tree in the UK, even though some are quite large!

Best-Selling Plug Plants at Gardeners Dream

Our vast collections bedding plant varieties are extensive, so we know it can be hard to choose a garden-ready flower for ground cover or a raised bed.

But at Gardeners Dream, all our plants are amazing value for money when you purchase a mix set. Furthermore, we ensure excellent germination and half hardy plants that can live comfortably in the UK climate.

We find that providing a mix of plug plants in a single tray allows you to brighten up your garden and maybe even discover a new favourite.

Here are some of the most popular planting plugs in our range:

Begonia

Begonia plugs are naturally a half hardy annual that blooms well in semi shade or full sun positions. Flowering months are from summer to early autumn, and their blooms are striking with vibrant colours and full petals.

These are customer favourites due to their versatility. Growing to a spread of 30cm at maturity, these plants make good ground cover but will thrive equally well when planted in pots.

While these begonia have fairly good drought resistant, they can be prone to root rot if left sitting in waterlogged soil. Just make sure your soil drains well in the wet months (or grow your begonia in pots) to avoid a disaster.

Assorted Shrubs

If you'd like to add some height to your garden but aren't sure which plant variety to go for, then this shrub mix will be perfect.

Containing 6 different shrubs that have been hand-selected by Gardeners Dream - just another part of the exemplary service provided by our gardeners - this set suits any garden.

Perennial shrubs tend to be more winter hardy and are suited to both sun, shade, and partial shade locations. Some shrubs have flowering months throughout the summer season, while others lend beautiful foliage instead.

Oh, and did you know that we supply our plug plants in fully recyclable trays at Gardeners Dream? Just another reason to buy your hardy biennial and half hardy perennial flowers from us too!

Explore the full range of shrubs, as well as our conifers and laurel trees, to discover some plants with beautiful foliage that can rival the most extravagant blooms.

Geranium

At Gardeners Dream, we have both a zonal and variegated geranium mix.

A geranium likes acidic soil and tends to prefer a sunny (or only partially shaded) spot in your garden. These flowers are annuals and will provide a sudden burst of colour for a season.

Reaching 50cm at maturity, these flowers offer a nice alternative to planting shrubs. Starting off as 3cm plugs, they are easy to grow too - brilliant for child-friendly gardening clubs!

The cut flower looks amazing in displays and you can encourage further flowering by deadheading the plants. You'll get a bumper crop of flowers throughout summer with geraniums.

Petunia

For a longer lasting flash of colour, petunia can put on a show from spring to autumn. Planting petunia in your garden is a good way to add some colour at a ground level. They're also ideal for containers and pots of all sizes.

These petunia plugs are happy when well-watered and love a sun or dappled shade spot. They bloom with a bright colour that will live up any garden. Just remember to water them regularly!

Like our magnolia trees, planting petunia in your garden is a wonderful way to add a focal point with visually stunning flowers.

From our seeds to small trees, we can ship them to you for free no matter the size of your order. That's part of the excellent service we offer for every single customer!

Verbena

Last on our list of best partial sun shade plug plants is the verbena variety.

Our selection of verbena plugs are brilliant for low-effort gardening. Once planted, these verbena small plants grow into a voluptuous shape that overflows flowerbeds, pots and baskets with clusters of elegantly coloured flowers.

Verbena likes acidic soil as well as slightly more alkaline soils - in fact, it's not fussy. It can grow anywhere across the UK as long as your soil drains well.

You should also feed and water the verbena plugs regularly once established to ensure the best flowers.

Our customers love the verbena flower plugs at Gardeners Dream because they do not require deadheading or pruning to flower throughout summer and into September!

From broad bean seeds to cottage garden flower plugs, we have an amazing range of plants that love to grow in the UK. Make sure you take a look at our flowering trees and hedging plants next to add some height to your garden alongside our exemplary plug plants.
