The name Pennisetum Alopecuroides might sound a little complicated to seasoned gardeners but this ornamental grass is an easy one to grow. Also known as the ‘Hameln Gold’ or Fountain Grass, this hardy and compact variety can reach a height of 1 metres. Its compact growth habit allows it to be grown as a container plant and packs lots of colour power in its mound. This grassy shrub has one job and that is to brighten up dull corners in a garden.

Hameln Gold is varied and colourful. It features grass like golden-green foliage that spreads from the base of the plant like a fountain. Its flowers are brown, resembling large foxtails that bloom from July to October. It flowers profusely, sometimes up to 100 flowers each season. Its bright light radiating leaves set accent during autumn in any garden.

Hameln Gold grass can adapt to a wide range of growing conditions. It prefers a sunny location although it will do great even in partial shade. It will thrive in a nutrient-rich, slightly moist soil that is well-drained. Make sure that the roots of the plant are moderately water and are not allowed to dry out.

Trim back any old foliage in spring. Allowing enough space between the two plants is important as its leaves need some space for arching. Apply a generous feed of slow-release fertilizer in summer.

Hameln Gold can make some very interesting low borders when grouped together. It can decorate your flower bed and patio containers. It is ideal for rockeries and poolside, adding a bright contrast of colour across the garden.
