A great way to get the children to eat fresh fruit is to offer a delicious red, juicy Apple Spartan. It is packed full of sweetness and looks so appealing in a dark red colour.
Apple Spartan originates from Canada in 1926. Due to its roots being in colder climates, it is tough and makes the ideal apple tree to grow in difficult regions and the cooler northern regions of the country. The fruit is a delightful deep red to purple colour with a snow white flesh. It offers a juicy and crisp taste with a refreshing crunch. Fruit picking time is September but you can leave the apples on the tree for a bit longer, allowing the flavour to develop. After picking, the flesh softens a little but still remains juicy. These apples can be used for juicing and produce a refreshing sweet juice, ideal for summer picnics and garden lunches.
Malus domestica 'Spartan' needs to be cross-pollinated to produce fruit. Plant in a sunny, open area with another tree from the same flowering group, the Worcester Pearmain is a good choice.
Apple Spartan is offered as a rootstock MM106, semi-dwarfing, which is tolerant of a range of soils including grassed orchards and poor soils. This is the most widely used rootstock. Plant with a spacing of 4.5m between the rows for best results. When left unpruned it will reach heights of 4-5m in a 10 year period.
