The best way to get the children to eat fresh fruit is to offer a delicious red, juicy Apple Katy. It is packed full of sweetness and looks so appealing in a bright red colour.
Apple Katy originates from Sweden in 1947, where it is known as Apple Katja. It was developed as a cross between James Grieve and Worcester Pearmain. Due to its roots being in colder climates, it is the ideal apple tree to grow in difficult sites and cooler northern regions of the country.
Malus domestica 'Katy' produces heavy crops of bright red fruit, ready for harvesting in early September. Apple Katy needs to be cross-pollinated to produce fruit. Plant in a sunny, open area with another tree from the same flowering group, the Redsleeves is a good choice.
Apple Katy can be eaten straight off the tree to enjoy its sweet, strawberry, juicy taste. They are also ideal for juicing, offering a sweet, slightly dry and refreshing taste. These apples are great for cooking and will delight the children when made into candy apples covered in a sugary sweet coating.
This tree is offered as a rootstock MM106, semi-dwarfing, which is tolerant of a range of soils including grassed orchards and poor soils. This is the most widely used rootstock. Plant with a spacing of 4.5m between the rows for best results. When left unpruned it will reach heights of 4-5m in a 10 year period.
