Characteristics: A clump forming evergreen grass with long thin leaves, sprays of brown-pink flowers and a pleasant citrus scent. A culinary plant frequently seen in East Asian cuisine. Supplied in a 8cm pot.
Growth and Spread: Ultimate height of up to 1.5m and spread of up to 1m.
Care and Maintenance: Lemon Grass is relatively easy to grow. Plant in a sheltered spot with full sun and keep the soil moist but well drained. The plant prefers a temperature of around 5°C or above so is best brought indoors over winter.
Period of Interest: The blue-green foliage is evergreen and retains its colour year-round. Green and brown-pink flowers appear in late summer when grown outside but won’t blossom if the plant is grown under glass.
Top Tip: Harvest little and often to use in recipes while maintaining the plant’s shape. The stems can be harvested all year round.
Lemon Grass, also known as Citronella, is an attractive evergreen herb that requires little maintenance and is a popular inclusion in kitchen gardens.
It features long blue-green stems that can blossom green and brown-pink flower sprays during the summer and autumn months. The plant is fragrant with a pleasant citrus flavour that is often used in Asian dishes, particularly Thai curries and soups. Its subtle lemony flavour complements fish very well and the leaves can be infused to make a lemon flavoured tea.
The long slender arching foliage of Lemon Grass adds structure to any outdoor space. It grows well in post and containers, which makes it easy to move into a conservatory or greenhouse during the coldest months.
