Laurus Nobilis, also known as Bay Laurel, Laurel Leaf or Bay Tree, is a highly ornamental, upright evergreen shrub. It has fragrant, narrow glossy green leaves that are joined by dense clusters of small, pale yellow flowers in Summer. This is then followed round, glossy black fruit in Autumn.
The shrub has foliage that can be used in many culinary ways and, historically, has been used for medicinal purposes. Bay leaves are a popular addition to stews, soups and other long-cooked dishes, and can be used both fresh or dry.
Nowadays, Bay Trees are most popularly used as attractive hedging, and would traditionally be trained and cut into a topiary. It is the perfect addition to create a gorgeous, upright bush for a structural feature in any formal garden.
