The Laburnum x watereri 'Vossii', commonly called the Voss's Laburnum tree or the Golden Chain is an ornamental tree with a rounded habit. It offers abundant, attractive racemes, or flower clusters of vibrant yellow flowers. The flowers bloom in may to June and can last as long as two to three weeks in the summer. As they fade, they are followed by long seed pods. The blooms are highly scented and hang downwards, much like bunches of grapes, creating a stunning effect.
The foliage offers a lovely light-green colour, creating a bright backdrop for the luminous flowers, and looks especially enchanting when the sunlight filters through them.
The Voss's Laburnum is fully hardy and tough and can tolerate a wide range of soil types and sites. It can thrive in the cold and will also grow in chalky ground, but will do better if placed in a sun-filled position on well drained soil. It is usually grown as a tree which has neat rounded form and requires no pruning. It can however, be pruned into a hedge or to form an arch over a path or walkway. The ‘Laburnum walk’ is well known as an arch of Laburnums supported by any trellis-like structure.
Be aware that all parts of this tree are poisonous, especially the seeds. It is toxic to both animals and humans when ingested. Do not plant the tree where children may be tempted to play with or eat the seeds. Do not plant it where seeds may fall into ponds or lakes where children play or where household pets may drink.
The holder of an RHS Award of Garden Merit, the Voss's Laburnum tree adds great interest and is ideal for a low maintenance garden.
