Ipheion Uniflorum Rolf Fiedler is a fragrant star-shaped bloom with delightful periwinkle blue petals with a darker blue stripe running in the middle of each petal and is accompanied by narrow and long light green leaves. Multiple stems grow from each bulb with flowerheads approximately 3-4cm in diameter.
Hardy and clump-forming, Ipheion Uniflorum Rolf Fiedler is beautiful for underplanting and using for blankets of blooms. Inclined to naturalise and will colonise areas where it is planted. Showy bloom perfect to plant at the front of borders and beds.
Ipheion are perennial star-shaped flowering bulbous plants within the Amaryllis family. Origins of Ipheion are from South America, specifically Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay and they have been adapted and species of the Spring Starflower have naturalised in other parts of the world. With bruising or damage to the leaves, Ipheion will give off a slight onion odour, demonstrating its connection to its onion relatives.
Generally small with sweet smelling perfumes, Ipheion ranges in colours of muted tones of blues, violets and whites. Regal blooms have six decadent petals in the shape of a star. Varieties are mostly limited to heights between 10-20cm with foliage that is light green, long and narrow
Plant Ipheion in areas with full sun that have soils that drain well and are fertile. Ipheion are hardy in most places in the UK and should be planted approximately 8-10cm deep. When grown in containers, a loam-based soil is recommended that retains moisture but allows for drainage
Ipheion has a bushy or bunching tendency and with its shorter stature makes for great underplanting in beds and borders and will naturalise suitable areas with colonies of flowers. Planted en masse, Ipheion will create a carpet of leaves and blooms. Ipheion are clump-forming and will continue to increase in numbers in areas where they are left undisturbed.
