Known by the Latin name Ilex aquifolium, Standard Holly Trees are evergreen and provide year round interest. They bloom small white flowers in April and vibrant red berries in autumn with shiny foliage that remains rich in colour throughout the year.
These ornamental trees are a beautiful accent for small gardens and patios, and create a striking impression when used to flank entrances. They have been trained into a classic lollipop shape with a single stem and come complete with a charming jute pot cover. Standard Holly Trees can reach an eventual height of over 12m and spread of up to 8m if not kept pruned into shape.
Holly trees are hardy to the sometimes harsh British climate and you’ll find your new tree is easy to care for. As with all potted trees, it will need to be watered regularly, especially during dry spells. Other than that, a little light pruning once a year is all you need to maintain the attractive shape and keep your holly tree looking healthy.
Holly will thrive in most soil types but good drainage is essential. Be sure to place your tree in a bright spot. Full sun is preferred but the tree will tolerate partial shade. The best time of year for annual pruning is late winter or early spring, just before the holly enters its growing phase.
Standard Holly Trees are ideal for adding height and colour to patios and smaller gardens. Each tree is 80-100cm tall and has the potential to grow to an impressive height. These delightful trees can be kept in pots and containers or planted out in the garden, where they can grow to their ultimate height.
Holly trees create a splash of colour throughout the year and their glossy evergreen foliage makes them a popular choice with both novice gardeners and more experienced growers. Delicate white flowers appear in April, adding interest through the spring and summer months. However, holly is most well known for its vibrant red berries. These appear in autumn or early winter, often as late as November or December, and will often remain on the tree until the following spring. As well as looking pretty, these berries are a valuable food source for overwintering birds, squirrels and other small mammals.
