Characteristics: A herbaceous perennial with purple-green stems, green oval leaves and summer blooming light purple flowers. Strongly aromatic with a pleasant peppermint scent.
Growth and Spread: Ultimate height of up to 1m and spread of up to 1.5m.
Care and Maintenance: Peppermint prefers a spot in full sun or partial shade in moist but well drained soil. Cut back once the flowers have faded and mulch to prepare for winter.
Period of Interest: Stems and foliage appear in spring with spikes of small pale purple flowers blossoming in late summer. The plant will retreat below ground in autumn before re-emerging in spring.
Top Tip: Plant in a pot or container to prevent the it taking over the herb garden.
Mentha × piperita is a fast growing herb that is easy to care for. It emanates a powerful minty scent and will return year after year. Its bushy shape is well suited to the back of borders and herb gardens, but thrives in pots as well.
Peppermint has a strong flavour and an abundance of uses in the kitchen. It is commonly used to make herbal teas but is also useful in salads and desserts. It makes for refreshing, peppery garnish for summer drinks in the garden. Peppermint tea is widely known to alleviate nausea, aid digestion and relieve headaches.
Planting peppermint helps deter pests including spiders, flies, caterpillars, rats and mice. The tiny blooms will also prove irresistible to pollinators, and will attract bees and butterflies to your outdoor space.
