Lemon Verbena, or Aloysia citriodora, is an elegant bushy herb with a distinctive zesty aroma that is reminiscent of lemon sherbet sweets.
Leaves can be dried or frozen for use later in the year. However, they are most flavoursome when freshly harvested during growing season. Lemon verbena is most commonly used in herbal teas, either on its own or combined with mint. This herb also complements chicken and fish dishes and works well in desserts, cocktails and preserves.
Lemon Verbena can be grown as an annual but, with winter protection, the plant will burst back to life the following spring. It is advisable to move pots indoors or provide additional mulch to protect roots during winter. This herb prefers well drained soil and the roots should be kept dry during cold wet months.
Aloysia citriodora is easy to grow and is well suited to the back of borders and herb gardens. It thrives in pots and containers, which can easily be moved around the garden to make the most of the plant’s delicious fragrance.
