Characteristics: Deciduous, robust, hardy fern. Produces lance shaped, mid-green fronds that turn a copper colour in early Autumn and die back in late Autumn.
Growth & Spread: Ultimate height and spread of 1m.
Period of Interest: Spring and Summer interest. The fronds will turn copper and die back in late Autumn, and then produce new growth in Spring.
Water & Maintenance: Prefers partial or full shade. Plant in a moist, humus rich soil. Water regularly to prevent the soil from drying out.
Known commonly as male fern, the Dryopteris filix-mas is a deciduous, robust, hardy fern. In Spring, this fern produces an upright tuft of lance shaped, mid-green fronds. The leaves then turn a copper colour in early Autumn, before dying back. This plant is well suited as a border plant or in a shaded cottage garden.
