Vaccinium macrocarpon ‘Early Black’ – commonly known as Early Black Cranberry – is a low-growing, creeping evergreen shrub with oblong, dark green leaves which turn a ravishing bronze in the winter months. The foliage is accompanied in spring by delicate pink flowers, and by mid-late August a crop of plump, deep red/purple cranberries will be ready for picking.
Reaching an ultimate height of 60cm and an ultimate spread of 2m, Vaccinium Macrocarpon ‘Early Black’ provides excellent ground cover due to its trailing nature. The purple berries can easily be mistaken for black, and ripen much earlier than other varieties, hence the plant’s name. The berries are perfect for pies, desserts, juices, jams and more, with a medium-sweet taste.
