Rosa rugosa is commonly known as 'Common Wild Rose' it is an extremely popular UK native hedge that displays vibrant bright green foliage with light pink, red and white fragrant flowers. Once the flowers fall this plant produces colourful rose hips that are red and orange in colour. These rose hips produce excellent winter feeding for wildlife and wild birds as they are filled with delicious seeds. Rosa is a very fast growing species with a rambling habit and as they are filled with thorns make an excellent barrier to keep intruders out.
Rosa rugosa will do fine in any type of soil and can be planted inland or in coastal areas. Common Wild Rose grows at around 1-2 feet per year but can be pruned to a manageable size of 1m high if required.
