Characteristics: A striking deciduous climber blossoming large ruby-red flowers with golden yellow stamens.
Growth and Spread: Ultimate height of up to 2.5m and spread of up to 1m.
Care and Maintenance: Plant in moist but well-drained soil in a spot that enjoys fun sun or partial shade. Prune back and mulch in early spring to encourage fresh growth.
Period of Interest: Flowers from April to October. New foliage grows in spring and falls away in autumn.
Top Tip: Grow in amongst bedding plants and other ground cover to help keep the plant’s roots cool.
This is a hardy compact climbing plant that grows up to 2.5m high to create a striking focal point on a trellis or obelisk. Clematis Niobe produces masses of blooms, and its long flowering period makes it a popular choice with gardeners. It is easy to care for and also works well in pots and containers to add colour to patios and paved areas.
The deep red flowers appear almost black when they first form, before morphing into a beautifully deep ruby-red hue. They have a rich velvety texture, which is beautifully complemented by vibrant glossy green leaves. Bright yellow stamens attract bees and other pollinators to the garden.
This variety of Clematis has won the RHS Award of Garden Merit due to its yearly reliability, magnificent colour and disease resistance.
