Prunus cerasus ‘Morello’ is a variety of cherry tree carrying some of the best sour cooking cherries in the UK. The trees grow more compact than some other breeds thanks to the Gisela rootstock, which is cultivated to allow ease of care, management and the picking of the fruit when ready and ripe. Clusters of attractive, white flowers appear on spreading branches in the Spring, followed by small, glossy dark red cherries in the mid-Summer.
The cherries have a very acidic and sour flavour, gaining a sour-sweet tang when very ripe. This variety of cherry is usually grown for the kitchen to be used in cooking for pies and tarts or creating jams and preserves.
Plant in moist, well-drained soil and keep in full or partial sun. The tree is fairly low maintenance as it flowers late, avoiding the winter frosts and is quite resistant to disease. The cherries may be eaten by birds, so some form of protection or netting is advised.
