The Betula Jacquemontii is a tall, striking variety of the Birch tree. It grows to over 9m and has a startling eye-catching white bark that seems to almost glow. Contrasting beautifully with the white bark is the dense crown of deep green leaves, creating a lovely ornamental look. In autumn the leaves turn to rich golden tones before falling in the winter. The tree offers yellow catkins in April to May.
The tree is a native of the Himalayas and was discovered by Joseph Hooker. It was named after Victor Jacquemont, the French naturalist.
The White Stem Birch tree is fully hardy and easy to grow. It prefers medium to wet soil, but can also thrive in warmer, dryer climates. Like most Birch trees, the White Stem Birch grows rapidly to maturity, making them a good option to plant in a new garden that you want to get established fairly fast. Unlike the Silver Birch, the branches do not droop with age, and the tree retains a fine architectural shape.
This is a great statement tree, offering interest all year round, ideal for a smaller to medium sized section of your garden. If you are up to it, join other fanatical gardeners who jet spray or sponge wash the trunks to enhance the startling white colour. Placing a few strategic accent lights in your garden adds to the overall dramatic décor effect.
