The Malus domestica ‘James Grieve’ is a mid-season versatile apple. When it is picked in early-mid September, at this point it is enjoyably acidic and refreshing. However, if it too sharp for eating, it can also be used for cooking as it keeps its shape once cooked.
Apple are one of the easier fruit trees to grow and are increasingly becoming more popular with gardeners. They are medium sized deciduous trees with flashy Spring flowers and ornamental or edible fruit in the Autumn.
James Grieve was raised in Scotland at the end of the 19th century, the height of the Victorian period of apple development in the UK.
Apple trees benefit from growing in slightly sheltered, sunny area, as the blossom will attract a large variety of pollinators as well as the sun will help ripen the fruit.
